Solar Power Plants Are More Appealing than Nuclear Power Plants

There are many solar training schools fully equipped to prepare the workforce needed to complete and operate solar power plants. Solar photovoltaic training is mandatory in order to complete the solar plants, assuming that many plants will go online in reaction to the nuclear power plant explosions in Japan. In order to start-up ones career in the solar energy industry, one should attend solar training courses to receive a solar installation certification. Many solar training schools also offer a free solar training seminar if one wants an introductory course in solar training. In order to live in a safer world, we must look into building solar power plants as an alternative to nuclear plants. We have already witnessed in the past what can happen when a nuclear power plants explodes. The disaster in Japan was a recent reminder of why solar power plants are a safer alternative to nuclear plants.

Boiler scrappage scheme 'could help 125,000 homes'

An energy saving initiative which aims to encourage householders to fit more efficient heating systems has been launched today (January 5th 2010). Under the programme, up to 125,000 homes across England with working G-rated boilers will be able to apply for a £400 voucher from the Energy Saving Trust towards the cost of purchasing a new A-rated device. The boiler scrappage scheme - which was first announced in the Pre-Budget Report - could also give consumers money off energy-saving equipment such as biomass boilers or heat pumps. According to the government, the programme could reduce household fuel bills by between £200 and £235 per year, while slashing carbon emissions by up to 140,000 tonnes.....

First Minister praises nappy laundry service

The Nappy Laundry Company celebrates its second birthday having prevented a staggering six tonnes of disposable nappies from going into landfill. First Minister Alex Salmond (MSP) said: “Using real nappies has long been recognised as the most natural and environmentally friendly way to bring up baby. The drawback has always been the amount of work involved, which understandably, puts many hard-pressed parents off. “Initiatives such as those of the Nappy Laundry Company have helped to take the work out of real nappies, and have saved tonnes of disposable nappies from going to landfill. That's something which is good in the present, and even better for the future.”

Author encourages people to live in green homes

eople who want to live in green homes have been encouraged to consider the design of their property. According to Terence Conran, author of Eco House Book, houses in the UK are not typically decorated and designed with the environment in mind. However, he believes that consumers who make relatively small changes to their home could reduce their carbon footprint and impact on the natural world. Mr Conran suggested a number of measures to help people become more eco-friendly, such as installing water-saving devices and using more energy-efficient light bulbs. Homeowners were also encouraged to consider alternative means of generating power and improving insulation. "Today, more than ever before, good intelligent design and green design are one and the same," Mr Conran commented. Read full article on site.

Firewood Preparation.

If you have access to some woodland or you are wanting to cut up some fallen branches or tree thinnings in you garden, you might like to save this timber to burn on a wood burning stove. To do this often means moving each length of timber for each cut, often done with the log resting on another log near ground level, not exactly good for your back or very safe. The LOGMATE was designed after many years of doing just that, bending down to cut timber while it was propped clear of the ground on another log. Even after finally making a conventional saw horse, I found I was constantly moving the log or turning it around for each cut. For more information please visit the website.

Fairtrade and Handmade Leather Journals

Our Fairtrade Leather Journals are a wonderful gift and do not have any wood in them. A great amount of papers on the market, both commercial and fine art are made from wood pulp. Our Leather Journals are made from ‘Khadda’ paper. ‘Khadda’ is made using unbleached hand spun rags left over from the garment industry. Except for the electric motors used for pulping, calendaring and peripheral activities, all production is manual. No harsh chemicals or dyes are used. No two sheets are ever identical and decorative effects are produced by inclusions such as petals, grass, and silk thread and waste threads. One ton of Indian handmade paper, produced from cotton rag waste, saves about 270 Eucalyptus or at least 400 bamboo trees that would be required to make the same quantity of machine made paper.

Caring for upholstered furniture

I have frequently been posed the question, “How can I best care for my new suite?” A sensible question to pose, considering the value of the investment! Following on from their successful switch to Fairtrade products on their catering units, JARM Amusements have just launched their Environmental Policy Statement, with the aim of becoming the most environmentally friendly funfair operators in the U.K. Company spokesman, Arthur Newsome, explained that ultimately the company hoped to recycle all of their waste, as well as becoming carbon neutral, but that would be something that was going to take time and investment. In the meantime the company would take all of the easier steps that were possible now. He went on to say that, “Little things, like arranging for local gardeners to compost all of our used coffee grinds and teabags, makes a small but still worthwhile reduction in the waste we send to landfill, and the products we do transport to the local tip will be in biodegradable bags, another easy change that anyone can make."

Change One Thing

Not so long ago, someone asked me if there were only one item I could change from a so called "normal" brand to fairtrade, what would it be. I didn't take long to give my answer. Coffee. Since I've set up Only Fair, I've come across lots of people who think that fair trade means a product is more expensive. Sometimes it can be but only by a few pence. Next time you visit your local supermarket, compare some of the big name brands with the fair trade brands and I'm sure you'll be surprised. Whilst there are over sixty varieties of coffee, in terms of trading only two are significant. Robusta is widely used in soluble coffee and for stronger roasts. Arabica has a milder flavour and is grown at higher altitudes. It's much harder to grow and demands a higher price than robusta. Coffee is a difficult crop

Organic Skincare is taking the world by storm right now, however, Paul Penders Organic Skincare which is distributed in the UK by The Natural Skincare Company is not only free from artificial preservatives, colours and perfumes, but is also COLD BLENDED! So, what does that mean? Cold blending means that during the manufacturing process the formulation is not heated above 35 deg. C thus instead of the potency of ingredients being destroyed by heat (a bit like cooking vegetables), with the new Paul Penders formulations the full strength of all the ingredients is retained ensuring that the full power of all the vitamins and anti-ageing ingredients are retained. The small team behind the website run the project on a 'not for profit' basis and concentrate on providing sensible and practical advice for event organisers and music festivals - as well as hosting the online message board where festival organisers (and indeed anyone who goes to festivals) can swap good green ideas and promote sustainability. The team are currently building up a database of good green suppliers and a new award - the 'red kite' award - which will recognise festivals who have already developed good environmental practice as well as supporting events which are trying to improve and get greener. Essential Care products Highly Commended

We are delighted to receive two Highly Commended awards for our Organic Moisture Cream and Gentle Herb Shampoo in Lifescape Magazine's recent beauty awards (April 2007 issue). Our philosophy is simple: All ingredients must have therapeutic value, as well as making the product a joy to use. We use herbs and essential oils in therapeutic concentrations for optimum benefit. For example, research has shown that aloe vera is only effective in concentrations of over 70%, so for maximum efficacy we use 100% where appropriate. Plant oils must be virgin and cold-pressed so that they have their full antioxidant vitamin-content intact, so as to actively nourish the skin and protect it from premature ageing.

Burra Bears launched a ‘peerie’ Burra Bear

To celebrate the 10th Anniversary Burra Bears launched a ‘peerie’ Burra Bear, a small version of the original. The iconic Fair Isle jumper represents our traditional Shetland textile culture, and is revered for it’s intricate construction, but it is often thrown away, like ordinary clothing, when elbows are worn through, and cuffs fray...I cut into it with scissors, a drastic but creative act! Unworn pieces of garment were used to make the bear. I re-valued each piece, it’s patterns and colours, then carefully placed, matched and seamed the scraps into the bear shape (approx 12” high and very sturdy). The remainder was cut up for filling; the cuffs or collar ribs were used for ears. I made a solid and comfortable form, best appreciated by holding the bear.

Suma have started rolling out a “face to face with food” workshop, working closely with former Master Chef finalist Fiona Bird. One of the first schools attended was Nortonthorpe Hall School in Huddersfield. We started the day with a small group who weren’t in the least interested in what we had to say but gradually, through perseverance and a superb teaching manner, we drew them in. Fiona had them talking, measuring & mixing ingredients, asking questions and generally enjoying the whole experience. We provide all the ingredients and the chefs, Suma caters for 160 workers per day so cooking for 30 children is a small feat in comparison.
